Happenings at This Day in History

About a year ago I stopped making regular updates to this blog to concentrate on my Namnesia Antidote blog. While that is an ongoing effort, I am starting what should be about a year long effort to revitalize the concept of a "This Day in History" blog. I have decided to leave this blog intact and as-is, using a new "This Day in History 2.0" blog for my expanded and full version. Please feel free to email with your ideas. The two tables below should allow you to find a posting for the "Day in History" you wish to research.

September 26......

September 26 is the 269th (270th in leap years) day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. There are 96 days remaining in the year on this date.

Best Liberal Quote of the Day: On Doubt "If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." — Rene Descartes

Stupidest and/or Scariest Quote from the Right for the Day: On Balanced Budget or The Dive to Red Ink "[Balancing the budget] has nothing to do with our pay . . . No, I would not, I am not a federal employee. I am a constitutional officer. My job is in the Constitution of the United States, I am not a government employee, I am in the Constitution." — House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX), when asked if he would support congressional pay cuts during a government shutdown. "Talk Back Live," CNN, 12-19-95. In "Don't Touch Our Pay, House Republicans Say," 1-2-96, the Washington Post pointed out that House members made $133,600 per year, that those in leadership positions made even more, that on three occasions the Senate unanimously approved language preventing U.S. representatives, senators and the president from getting paid during a government shutdown, and that five times Rep. (now Sen.) Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) tried to get the House to consider the proposal and was rebuffed by Republicans, especially in the leadership-controlled Rules Committee.

Dumbest Thing Said for the Day: From Politics "I'm not against the blacks, and a lot of the good blacks will attest to that." — Evan Mecham, governor of Arizona {The only governor in Arizona history to be impeached, convicted and removed from office. It is very appropriate that the NASA APOD features Saguaro cacti, they grow only in the state of Arizona in the United States and the state of Sonora in Mexico.}

{Disclaimer: I have attempted to give credit to the many different sources that I get entries. Any failure to do so is unintentional. Any statement enclosed by brackets like these are the opinion of the blogger, A Proud Liberal.}
